There’s a lot of mystery, misunderstanding and misinformation around Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities.

It’s often not known that the three are distinct ethnic groups, with separate traditions and lifestyles.

And sometimes, that misunderstanding can lead to marginalisation and racism.

Shiftwork – an upcoming exhibition at Tŷ Pawb – aims to dispel some of the myths, looks into the representation of such groups and features the work of artists from GRT communities.

The exhibition will feature work by artists Daniel Baker, Shamus McPhee, Artur Conka and Billy Kerry.

Some of the works shown featured as part of the Gypsy Maker project, an initiative launched in 2014 by the Romani Cultural & Arts Company to profile the work of GRT artists in venues across Wales.

Shiftwork launches at Tŷ Pawb at 6pm on Friday, August 31, and will run until Sunday, September 30.

Artists Shamus McPhee and Daniel Baker will also hold family workshops at 10am and 2pm at Tŷ Pawb during the opening day on Saturday, September 1.

And on the same day, Isaac Blake – director of the Romani Arts and Cultural Company – will hold a talk into GRT heritage and culture, and give an insight into the project.
