Dementia Action Week – May 17-21

Led by the Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Action Week sees the public come together to improve the lives of people affected by dementia.

Wrexham Council has purchased a number of RITA devices from My Improvement Network.

RITA stands for Reminiscence Interactive Therapy Activities. It gives those living with dementia access to apps, games and other leisure activities as part of their care.

Make sure you know about changes to Covid-19 restrictions in Wales

This innovative, evidence-based, state-of-the-art digital therapy system allows people to enjoy relaxation music, watch archive BBC news footage, view old photographs and listen to famous speeches, to help spark memories and start conversations.

Wrexham Council worked with Alzheimer’s Society and a group of people living with dementia along with their carers, to make sure RITA would work for them. The feedback was positive and with their endorsement we have now purchased the RITA.

Local care providers have been given the chance to apply to receive devices to use in their service.

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for People – Health and Adult Social Care, said: “The first set of devices should be with providers by early June. I am looking forward to working with them to see how successful they are in supporting those living with dementia in our communities.

“It is important to give people with dementia the opportunity to engage in meaningful activities and conversations and I hope that this is exactly what RITA will offer.”
