Don’t get scammed by a Fly Tipper

Did you know that over 70% of fly-tipping incidents contain household waste, and over 40% of Wales residents are at risk of being scammed by a fly-tipper.

It’s usually by a “man in a van” who advertises on social media that for a very reasonable sum they’ll take your rubbish – many aren’t legally allowed to use the household recycling centres and resort to taking your money and fly tipping it around the county borough.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

We all have a “duty of care” to make sure that our waste is disposed of responsibly and safely and if any fly tipped waste is traced back to us we’ll be fined up to £300 or even prosecuted.

Many companies operate legally to take your waste and there’s an easy way to find out if the one you’re using is – ask to see their Registered Waste Carrier card.

You could also ask where your waste is going and request a receipt for the service you are paying for.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said, “There’s lots of responsible people out there who will take your waste and give you a good service. However, we should all be aware that this isn’t the case all the time and we should make sure that the person we hire to clear our waste is legally registered and isn’t a fly tipper.

“Let’s all care for our environment and make sure our money goes to properly registered and responsible companies.”

Remember CARE when booking a waste removal service:

  • Check for a registered waste carrier
  • Ask where their waste is going
  • Record the vehicle make and registration involved
  • Evidence the transaction by requesting a receipt
