Welsh Government First Minister Eluned Morgan visited Wrexham today to see the council’s road maintenance programme in action.

The First Minister met with councillors and officers to see work underway on the A539 in Ruabon.

The A539 forms a critical link on the A-road network through Wrexham, connecting Ruabon through to Overton, and beyond into Shropshire. This important link also leads directly onto the A483 at Junction 1.

Like many parts of the A-road network, the surface is deteriorating quickly and despite numerous attempts to keep the worst defects at bay, the road has been highlighted for more significant repair.

This year Wrexham Council is planning to undertake a pilot project of preventative maintenance on the route – hopefully utilising funding made available via the re-introduced Local Government Borrowing Initiative.

Prior to the preventative maintenance measures, a programme of patch repairs is being undertaken on the route.

Councillor David A Bithell, Wrexham Council’s Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Strategic Transport said: “Working with the Welsh Government, we welcome the return of the funding initiative allowing local government borrowing to enhance our infrastructure maintenance programme.

“Sadly, infrastructure across Wrexham and across large parts of Wales and the UK is desperately in need of investment and any funding opportunity is welcomed.

“In Wrexham, our officers have developed innovative programmes for maintenance and repair work and again we look forward to the pilot project promoting preventative maintenance on this route.”

Councillor Terry Evans, Lead Member for the Environment, said: “Like David, I welcome the opportunity of working with the Welsh Government on the Local Government Borrowing Initiative.

“As Lead Member for the Environment, infrastructure maintenance is the most significant issue elected members and communities raise with me.

“The officers have worked hard to develop solutions for highways maintenance and I trust this work in Ruabon will help road users in general and the local community.”
