On Monday, March 2 a charter service travelled from Wrexham General to London Euston in a bid to re-establish a direct rail link between the two cities.

The significant number and variety of stakeholders demonstrated the strength and shared ambitions of the businesses, organisations and communities who would benefit from this provision, which could provide up to four return journeys between Wrexham and Euston daily.

Over 120 stakeholders and interested parties took the train journey to London with the purpose of highlighting the importance of improved rail connectivity between the Midlands, London, and Wrexham.

The train picked up various stakeholders and dignitaries along the way and also passed the locations of potential new stations on the line. Many of the stops are not currently served by a direct London train service.

Delegates then took busses to Westminster – a short walk away from Downing Street where pictures were taken outside the gates to promote the proposal. A small delegation was also invited inside the gate to hand-deliver the proposal to the door of Number 10.

Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for strategic transport, Councillor David A Bithell said: “Reliable, direct rail links are vital to strengthening our regional economy, attracting investment, and creating new opportunities for local businesses.

“This proposed new rail service represents a significant opportunity for improved connectivity between Wrexham, the Midlands and London and at no cost to the taxpayer.”

Councillor Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council, said: “This is a commercially driven proposal that delivers measurable economic value while strengthening our region’s long-term competitiveness.

“Our meetings with WSMR have been very positive and we are working closely with all stakeholders to turn this exciting proposal into a reality for Wrexham.

“If we get the go ahead, the new line is anticipated to deliver £9m in economic benefits between Wrexham, Shrewsbury and Walsall at no cost to the taxpayer.”

Lead Member for Economy and Regeneration, Councillor Nigel Williams said: “The last Wrexham to London direct service was halted in 2011.

“Since then and especially in the past few years, Wrexham has changed dramatically in terms of profile as a destination for tourism as well as a great place to do business.

“Introducing this service will enhance the travel experience and make accessing Wrexham via rail from the Midlands and London a quicker and more desirable option.”
