Could you be a councillor?

Have you ever wondered what it’s really like to be a councillor?

Perhaps you’ve thought about getting more involved in your community, but assumed local politics was for other people. People with lots of political experience, specialist knowledge, or more spare time than you have.

The truth is, councillors come from all walks of life. They’re parents, carers, employees, business owners, volunteers, students and retirees. What they share is a commitment to their communities and a willingness to get involved.

As Wrexham continues to grow and change, local people have a critical role to play in shaping its future. The more experiences, perspectives and voices involved in those conversations, the stronger our local democracy becomes.

That’s why we’re inviting people from across Wrexham to come along to our Could You Be a Councillor? events and find out more.

When and where…

We’re holding two informal events at the Guildhall:

Thursday, November 26, 2026, 5pm-7pm

Thursday, January 28, 2027, 5pm-7pm

Whether you’re actively considering standing for election one day, or you’re simply curious about what councillors do, you’ll be very welcome. Bring along your children, family and friends.

There is no need to book a place, but if you would like to register your interest click on this link.

On the night…

The evening will begin with a short question-and-answer session from 5pm to 5.30pm, where you’ll have the chance to put your questions directly to the chief executive, the Mayor and political group leaders. We will ask for questions to be sent in advance, focussed around the practicalities of life as a councillor.

After the panel discussion, you can chat informally with current councillors, council officers and representatives from Wrexham’s Youth Parliament. There will be information stands covering topics such as:

  • what councillors do in practice
  • balancing the role with work, caring responsibilities and family life
  • salary provided
  • support, training and allowances
  • standing for election and the nomination process
  • representing local residents and helping solve local issues

No question is too small. In fact, we expect many people will simply want honest answers about what the role is really like. You don’t need political experience. You don’t need special qualifications. And there is absolutely no obligation to stand for election.

The events are simply a chance to learn more, meet people already involved in local government, and explore whether it might be something you’d like to consider in the future.

We are particularly keen to hear from people who may not have previously seen themselves in public life. If you’re a working parent, a carer, a younger person, someone with a disability, or someone who feels they have a different perspective to bring, your voice matters just as much as anyone else’s.

Accessibility and booking

We want the events to be welcoming and accessible to everyone. If you have any access requirements, please let us know when booking and we’ll do our best to help.

Children, family members and friends are welcome to attend.

If you have any questions before the event, please contact legaldem@wrexham.gov.uk
