The results are in – your views on new Wrexham town centre attraction

Last month we launched a Wales-wide public survey to help us design a brand new attraction coming to Wrexham town centre.

Wrexham Council, in partnership with the Welsh Government, are undertaking a major redevelopment of the Wrexham Museum building to create a joint Football Museum for Wales and Wrexham Museum located on one site.

The new Football Museum will aim to tell the story of football in Wales, from the clubs, communities and supporters across the country, all the way up to the national teams and their historic achievements.

Wrexham Museum will be refurbished as part of the project and will feature brand new galleries exploring the history of Wrexham.

The questions in the survey were designed to help us learn more about who visits the museum, who doesn’t, and why.

The survey also asked people what they thought the Museum does well, what could be improved and what they would like to see included in the new Football Museum and revamped Wrexham Museum.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

    What you told us

Here are some of the key findings from the survey:

    • 529 responses were received in total
    • 51% of respondents had visited Wrexham Museum previously
    • Those responding to the questionnaire came from across Wales as well as some from England.
    • 75% of respondents considered themselves to be Welsh.
    • 67% of respondents were male, and 33% were female.
    • Majority of respondents were aged between 35-64.  Only 5% were under 24.

    The survey also found that….

    • 80% of all respondents were interested in an expansion of the core local history offer of Wrexham museum.
    • In addition to this, 84% of people were interested in the new Football Museum for Wales.
    • Football memorabilia is frequently listed as visitors’ favourite exhibits, alongside industrial history of the area and specific objects such as the Mold Cape and Brymbo man.
    • When asked what could be improved, visitors suggested more rotating and visiting exhibitions, increased advertising as well as a larger and brighter museum space.
    • When asked what would encourage people to visit the most common responses were interactive and engaging exhibitions, and activities and events with the football collection.
    • Very few people were interested in a development of retail or education sessions, but 50% of people suggested that better publicity about the museum and events would make them more likely to visit the museum.

Read on for a more in depth look at the results….

    Current Museum visitors

The survey found that visitors are most likely to have come to Wrexham museum from Wales, in particular from the area surrounding the museum and the Llandudno postcode.

Visitors are most likely to have last come recently (within the last year or immediately before the pandemic)

Most people have heard about the museum because they live locally or from word of mouth and recommendations from others.

People who have previously visited have come due to an interest in Wrexham’s heritage or a specific event or object. They are less likely to have come to entertain themselves or their children.

People enjoy the collection and the facilities – in particular the café – are especially popular. Temporary exhibitions also receive praise and have encouraged people to visit multiple times.

Football memorabilia is frequently listed as visitor’s favourite exhibits, alongside industrial history of the area and specific objects such as the Mold Cape and Brymbo man.

When asked what could be improved, visitors suggested more rotating and visiting exhibitions, increased advertising as well as a larger and brighter museum space.

Most people enjoyed their visit, rating it either excellent or just below excellent.

    Non Museum visitors

47% of those who had not visited the museum before had heard about Wrexham Museum.

Non-Visitors were also asked to indicate the reason why they had never visited Wrexham Museum. The most popular reason for not visiting was never having heard of the museum before. Additionally, non visitors frequently stated that they had either it had never occurred to them to visit, or that they felt that the museum was too far away or difficult to get to.

    The future

80% of all respondents were interested in an expansion of the core local history offer of Wrexham museum.

In addition to this, 84% of people were interested in the new Football Museum for Wales.

When asked what would encourage people to visit the most common responses were interactive and engaging exhibitions, and activities and events with the football collection.

Very few people were interested in a development of retail or education sessions, but 50% of people suggested that better publicity about the museum and events would make them more likely to visit the museum.

Overall the idea of an increase of events (both related to football and to Wrexham’s heritage) was received positively with some write-in answers suggesting activities ranging from art exhibitions to comedy events and guest speakers.

Location accessibility featured heavily in answers, with comments on how improved transport links to the museum and an increase of things to do in the area, suggested to encourage future visits.

Cllr Hugh Jones said: “Many thanks to everyone who responded to the survey from Wrexham and all over Wales. As results show, the interest in the new Football Museum continues to grow all over the country and the broad range of responses has given us an excellent platform to start developing ideas with the design team.

We hope this exciting new attraction will draw many new visitors to Wrexham town centre in the future, supporting our local economy and shining a spotlight on our local culture and heritage alongside the story of football in Wales.”

    What happens next

The results of the survey are now being discussed with the design team and will help inform the early proposals for the new Football Museum and revamped Wrexham Museum.

  • Your views needed on major new town centre attraction…

Your views needed on major new town centre attraction…

A major new attraction is coming to Wrexham town centre – and we need your help to develop and design it!

Wrexham Council, in partnership with the Welsh Government, are undertaking a major redevelopment of the Wrexham Museum building to create a joint Football Museum for Wales and Wrexham Museum located on one site. The museum will recognise the importance of football in Wales and secure Wrexham’s place as the spiritual home of football in Wales.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

New museum will ‘tell the story of football in Wales’

The new Football Museum is planned to be a major new attraction for Wrexham town centre, drawing visitors from all over the country and beyond. It will aim to tell the story of football in Wales, from the clubs, communities and supporters across the country, all the way up to the national teams and their historic achievements.

Wrexham Museum will be bigger and better than ever

The Football Museum will sit alongside new galleries exploring the history of Wrexham, that could include the stories of its prehistoric residents told through archaeological evidence, the Roman period, medieval times, the struggles and challenges of the age of industry, the wars of the modern era, and how people of Wrexham have lived, worked and socialised up to the present day through the collections held in trust by the museum.

    We need you!

To help us develop and design a museum which meets the needs of visitors and communities across Wales, we would like to hear your views. You can help by answering the questions in this survey.

The survey responses will be used to inform the development of both Wrexham Museum and the new Football Museum for Wales.

An exciting time for the town

Councillor Hugh Jones, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “The Football Museum project continues to make good progress and we’ve now reached the stage where public consultation on the design phase can begin in earnest. We want to gather views from as many people as possible, not only traditional museum visitors but also people who don’t usually visit the museum, and of course anyone interested in the new Football Museum project.

“The responses to this survey will be discussed with the project design team and will be hugely important in helping to inform the early proposals for this major new attraction town centre attraction – a Football Museum for Wales side by side with a revamped and refurbished Wrexham Museum.”

Dawn Bowden, Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport said: “Our unique history and culture brings many visitors to Wales. We are determined to do all we can to help our tourism, sports, creative and cultural industries recover from the experience of the pandemic and thrive in the future. We hope the proposed football museum and galleries will help attract many new visitors to Wrexham and support the local economy at what is an exciting time for the town.”

    ‘Football is about the fans’

The Football Museum project has already drawn interest from a few well known names of the Welsh game, including Ian Walsh (18 caps and 7 goals for Wales).

Ian said: “I think the new football museum for Wales project is fantastic and very exciting. This is especially so for me as it is based in Wrexham where I had one of the proudest days in a Welsh shirt beating England 4-1!!

“Football is about the fans and it is a great opportunity for them to have their opinion moving forward!”

The survey should take no more than 10 minutes. Your answers will remain confidential and will only be used to inform the early proposals for the museum.

  • Hidden Holt – Roman history revealed in new Wrexham Museum exhibition

Hidden Holt – Roman history revealed in new Wrexham Museum exhibition

July 17th 2021 sees the opening of Hidden Holt: The Story of a Roman Site, the first new exhibition at Wrexham Museum since the end of lockdown.

The title, Hidden Holt, is a reference to the nationally important Roman site hidden beneath the surface of the fields to the north-west of the popular border village.

The village of Holt has long celebrated its links with the Roman Empire and the village was once referred to as ‘Castle Lyons’, which was thought to derive from an older name meaning castle or camp of the legions.

The exhibition reveals the story of how this once lost Roman site was re-discovered in the early 20th century and excavated in the years prior to the First World War. The exhibition showcases the many finds from these excavations, most of which have not been displayed in north-east Wales for over a century.

Book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment online.

A great year for Roman heritage in Wrexham

Hidden Holt is a joint project between Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, Holt Local History Society, Wrexham Glyndwr University and Wrexham Museum.

Dr Kath Davies, Director of Collections and Research, Amgueddfa Cymru, said, “We’re proud of our commitment to making the national collections as widely available as possible. The finds from the excavation were acquired by the national museum nearly a century ago and will now be forming the core of this important exhibition at Wrexham.”

Sue Payne, chair of Holt Local History Society said “Holt Local History Society was formed in 1992 and currently has 100 members. Ever since then we have been keen to find out more about Holt’s history – in particular the Roman Tile and Pottery works excavated in 1907-15. The society commissioned a Geophysical Survey and report by ASW (Archaeology Survey West) in 2018. We then visited the National Museum Wales, Cardiff and St Fagan’s to view that excavation’s finds, which were donated to Cardiff in 1925.

“We are delighted that this has led to Wrexham Museum’s plan to hold a major exhibition, which tells the story of the excavation, and displays some 80 objects which have not been seen in north Wales since 1925. We have been pleased to have been extensively involved in its preparation.”

Councillor Hugh Jones, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “2021 is turning out to be Wrexham’s Year of Roman Heritage: the Rossett Roman Lead Pig is on display at the British Museum in London, plans are afoot for an excavation this autumn into a villa site also found near Rossett, and the Hidden Holt exhibition has provided a chance for a local history group to work with their local museum, their local university and Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales to create a special exhibition on our most important Roman site bringing Holt’s Roman collections home for the first time in a hundred years.

“We are incredibly lucky to have seen so many exciting Roman discoveries unearthed right on our doorstep here in Wrexham. I would urge everyone to visit the exhibition and take advantage of the opportunity to see this remarkable collection in up close.”

Some highlights to look out for

    The exhibition includes:

    • The Esclusham Hoard – a treasure trove of amazing Roman coins found near Wrexham and on display in the town for the first time ever.
    • A video presentation on Hidden Holt produced by students at Wrexham Glyndŵr University involving drone footage and colourized images of the 1907–15 excavation thanks to the skills and hard work of a small group of young graphic designers.
    • Children’s trail and gallery activities
    • Roman Holt selfie stand for those who would like to record their visit to Wrexham Museum
    • Two forecourt events on July 24th and August 21st in collaboration with Roman Tours and Park In The Past.

Holt’s Roman site will also be the subject of one of the talks at the Festival of British Archaeology Wales on July 29th which is being organized by Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales and the four Welsh regional archaeological trusts.

Hidden Holt is on show from July 17th until January 29th 2022.

Click and collect – bays now available on High Street and Holt Street

Town centre shoppers can now take advantage of our click and collect bays available on Holt Street (outside Tŷ Pawb) and High Street (outside the Butcher’s Market).

You can use the available bays for 30 minutes free parking to pick up any items you have pre-ordered from traders in the town centre.

The bays are conveniently located right next to our three town centre markets (see opening times below), so whether you’re picking up a take-away, collecting a gift or just stocking up on some essentials, it’s now easier than ever to come and show your support for our local traders!

Make sure you know about changes to Covid-19 restrictions in Wales

    Free parking after 11am

if you want to stay in town longer don’t forget there’s also free parking in all Council operated town centre car parks after 11am apart from Tŷ Pawb.

    This includes:

    • Crescent Road
    • Guildhall
    • Library
    • Market Street

This is an important time to help support our local businesses. But remember – the virus has not gone away and it is just as important as ever to stay safe as lockdown measures continue to be eased.

It’s still essential though that we all keep following social distancing guidelines, use the hand sanitisers available in the shops and markets and wear a face mask unless you are exempt.

Our social distancing champions will once again be out and about to assist you and answer any queries.

    Love your markets

Here are the current opening times for our town centre markets:

    • The Butchers Market is open 9am-4pm, Monday-Saturday (9am-1.30pm on Wednesdays).
    • The General Market is currently open 9am-4pm Monday-Saturday (closed on Wednesdays).
    • Wrexham’s weekly outdoor market is held every Monday throughout the year on Queens Square from 9am-4pm.
    • Tŷ Pawb’s Market and Food Court is open 10am-4pm, Monday to Saturday. Selected food court traders will be open until 6pm for take away.

Around 1 in 3 people with Covid have no symptoms and could spread the virus without realising.

Keep 2m distance and wear a face mask when needed.
