Celebrate the turning of the season and welcome in Autumn with our Environment staff for a Harvest festival as we celebrate the wonder of orchards and the important role they play for biodiversity and as a food source.
Fruit orchards are perfect for pollinators in Spring with blossom offering a welcome food source in the months of May and June.
Fruit orchards were traditionally a staple part of peoples diets with fruit such as apples and pears picked in Autumn and traditionally stored as a food supply during the Winter.
However, with modern practices local fruit orchards have declined and England and Wales have lost over 56% of their orchards since 1900.
At this event you can discover Tŷ Mawr Country Park’s own fruit orchard which is now 2 years old and in years to come will provide a food source for people and wildlife.
The Autumn under the Apple Tree event is packed full of hands on activities to get involved in:
- Enjoy our wild food nature trail takes you around the park, with prizes to be won at the end of the trail.
- Treat yourself to some freshly squeezed apple juice with Brymbo Heritage Trust
- Discover how a beehive works with Smithy Farm with their portable bee hives
- Take part in some campfire cooking and sample some seasonal fruit crumble.
This event is funded by the Woodland Trust Emergency Tree Fund.
