Tŷ Mawr Country Park will become a Fields in Trust site this year which means all of our Country Parks have received this status – meaning they can never be sold off or built on and will always be there for people in Wrexham to use and enjoy, ensuring they remain green spaces for good; for current and future generations.

To celebrate this achievement we’re holding an event at Tŷ Mawr on Saturday 23 September from 12 noon…which will include apple pressing with Brymbo Heritage Trust to make your own fresh and delicious apple juice, as well as hedgerow magic with Woodland Classroom; learning about the wonders of the hedgerow, foraging for your pantry, pot and medicine chest.

This will be followed by campfire cooking where Lea from Woodland Classroom will make an Elderberry Elixir and a Blackberry Jam – sugar free, super tasty and super healthy!

The 23 September also marks the Autumn Equinox and marks the beginning of The Tree Council’s ‘Seed Collection Season’. We will be sharing our knowledge about all the different tree seeds that can be found around Tŷ Mawr Country Park as well as creating nature art to take home. Why not pop down and test your knowledge?

We’ll also be celebrating our nomination for UK Tree of the Year and encouraging people to vote for the tree. If you think this tree deserves to win UK tree of the year, vote now!

Wrexham Council is working in partnership with the Woodland Trust to protect trees and woodlands throughout the county through our Woodland Connections project funded by Emergency Tree Fund. Come and learn more about the value of trees and woodlands to wildlife and people and share why you think trees matter.

Helen Griffiths, Chief Executive at Fields in Trust, said: “Parks are good for people. They are good for our physical health and our mental wellbeing, they bring our communities together and provide a connection to the natural world around us.

“So it’s up to all of us to help protect our precious green spaces for good, and I am pleased that Wrexham Council has done exactly that by protecting their 10 country parks – adding them to the many other parks and green spaces they have previously protected with us.”

Councillor David Bithell, Deputy Leader of Wrexham Council, who will be attending the celebration at Tŷ Mawr, said: “Our country parks play a huge role in our communities and in people’s health and wellbeing, as well the environment.

“We need to cherish them for current and future generations, and it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to achieve Fields in Trust status for all of our country parks.”
