Before hiring a ‘man with a van’, Wrexham residents are being advised to make sure they use a licensed waste carrier.
All householders have a duty of care to ensure that anyone taking away their waste is registered to do so.
Residents can check this on the Natural Resources Wales website.
Councillor Terry Evans, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Environment, said “It’s important that we help people understand how to dispose of their waste properly, and this includes only using responsible licensed waste operators to take away their rubbish.”
“So, if you’re thinking about paying a ‘man with a van’ to take away your rubbish, make sure they have a license first.
“Unlicensed waste carriers are more likely to fly-tip your rubbish, and you could still be held liable and forced to pay a hefty fine.”
“We should all take pride in our community and do everything we can to discourage fly-tipping.”
Legitimate companies should be happy to show you their waste carrier license and reassure you that your waste will be disposed of properly at an authorised site.
If your rubbish is fly-tipped and traced back to you, you could face a fine of up to £5,000 and prosecution.
Householders can also be issued a £300 fixed penalty notice as an alternative to being prosecuted.
