Sponsored by the 2029 Wrexham City of Culture bid, and part of the Wales in Bloom and Britain in Bloom Competition a special new landmark has landed on St Giles Way.

With thanks to Wrexham Association Football Club, we were given permission to use the club crest as part of a floral display/public artwork.

The artwork measures 5.75 meters across and is made up of plants including Ajuga Chocolate Chip, Sempervivum Green and Sedum Spurium ‘Dragons Blood.’

Wrexham won gold at Wales in Bloom 2023, and this is part of readying ourselves for the 2024 judging- we’ve also been invited to represent Wales in the Britain in Bloom competition going up against London and Dundee!

This year’s judging route will call at several venues and gardens including Wrexham Crematorium, Wrexham Recycling Centre, Erlas Walled Garden, Rhosnesni High School and Wrexham City Centre.

We are asking residents and community groups on the route for their assistance with this. Last year we had groups conducting litter picks, gardening competitions, planting up areas and hanging baskets to improve their area.

The competitions aims to make Wrexham environmentally friendly by eliminating graffiti, dog fouling, fly posting and promoting sustainable planting and floral displays to make Wrexham a more beautiful place to live and visit.

If you are interested in helping with the Britain in Bloom and Wales in Bloom Campaign or would like to sponsor a roundabout or planter then please contact Nicola Ellis on 01978 729638 or email at nicola.ellis@wrexham.gov.uk.

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy and Regeneration, said:

Firstly I would like to thank the club for allowing us to use their crest. We are extremely proud of our club and it’s a huge part of who we are in Wrexham.

Now the crest is in situ, it will be a fantastic addition to the city centre and I’m sure a firm favourite on the tourist trail for local and international fans and I look forward to seeing their ‘selfies” at the badge in the future.

After being awarded Gold and best in category last year, I’m really pleased we are entering again this year to build on that success with new exciting projects such as this as well as our colourful city centre displays and wildflower roundabouts and I urge local communities, businesses and schools to join in and get involved in any way they can.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for City of Culture at Wrexham Council said: “There is a great deal of exciting work taking place in preparation for our bid next year to host City of Culture 2029 which we will be sharing over the coming months. I’m delighted that the bid team are able to fund this public display that will be enjoyed by Wrexham residents, visitors and pollinators for the foreseeable future.”

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Environment, said: “Our environment team will be working hard to make our open spaces look and be as good as they can be, so we can all enjoy them.

“I encourage everyone to get involved as we work towards making Wrexham a welcoming environment to those of us who live here, and visitors.”
