The major renovation of two historic indoor markets in Wrexham is on course for completion later this year.

Work began on the complete refurbishment programme last summer, with Welshpool-based SWG Construction leading the project on behalf of Wrexham County Borough Council.

The Grade II-listed General and Butchers markets are being refurbished as part of the Wrexham Townscape Heritage Scheme, funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund (with thanks to the National Lottery Players), Welsh Government – Transforming Towns Fund, and Wrexham County Borough Council capital programme.

Jacqui Gough of SWG Construction said: “Work is progressing well on the renovation – it is an extensive programme of works, and we are sure it is something that the people of Wrexham will be proud of.

“The cafe is now complete and open to customers again, market stalls are being installed in the Butchers Market, and the second-fix joinery and second-fix mechanical and electrical services are progressing.

“Decoration is being carried out, and the stone repairs and facade work on the High Street is also progressing well. It has been an interesting project to work on, including the uncovering of several historic features incorporated into the refurbishment.”

“The markets play an important part in the regeneration of the city centre”

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy and Regeneration, said: “It’s great to know this refurbishment is progressing well. The markets play an important part in the regeneration of the city centre and we’re all looking forward to their completion and reopening to traders and public alike later in the year.”

Other work carried out by SWG Construction on site has included installing and plastering perimeter stall ceilings and stud walls, underground drainage and ductwork, and the decoration and installation of steel and timber boarding in the General Market.

The Butchers Market renovation will see a new layout of the central stalls in the market hall, aimed at increasing footfall and customer flow around the market.

The Markets will offer flexible units for traders, and the central stall layout is being redesigned to facilitate easier circulation. Upon completion, both markets will enjoy upgraded services, a WiFi network, CCTV, and improved disabled access, all of which will enhance the overall market experience for the community.
