The Lexus Wrexham Open 2025 has firmly established itself as a landmark event in British tennis, delivering record-breaking engagement and economic impact while showcasing world-class talent in North Wales.
As the biggest professional tennis event ever staged in North Wales and the largest indoor women’s tennis tournament in the UK the Lexus Wrexham Open has elevated the region onto the global sporting map. Wrexham is now one of only 31 cities worldwide to host an ITF event of this scale, reinforcing its status as a premier destination for elite sport.
The tournament achieved the highest spectator attendance of any indoor W100 event in 2025 and ranked fifth globally among W100 tournaments. Broadcast coverage was extensive, with BBC iPlayer generating over 47,000 requests and 16,000 hours of viewing, including 11,864 streams of the final. BBC Wales Today aired seven bulletins, while S4C and BBC Radio Wales provided live reports throughout the week. Social media buzz was equally impressive, with 154,000 views on BBC’s Instagram reel of Mimi Xu’s match point outperforming much of their football content and 1.04 million impressions across dedicated event channels.
Beyond the court, the Lexus Wrexham Open delivered an estimated £500,000 boost to the local business community, according to Sport England research. With 38 sponsorship partners, including 31 regional businesses and 14 based in Wrexham, the event fostered strong local engagement. Initiatives like the “Wrexham Ready” podcast and Welsh-language editions at the Eisteddfod further cemented its community roots.
Half of the prize money and ranking points were claimed by British players, making this the most successful return on investment event for the LTA in 2025. Player satisfaction soared, with a 95/100 rating, earning the tournament a star in the ITF Tournament Recognition Programme.
With its combination of elite competition, community integration, and economic benefit, the Lexus Wrexham Open is poised to become a prestigious annual fixture one that not only champions tennis but also celebrates the spirit and resilience of North Wales.
Cllr Nigel Williams Lead Member for Economy at Wrexham Council said “The figures in the report are extremely encouraging with lots of collaborative partnership works behind the scenes that ensured a successful and well received tournament that was to the benefit of the sport, as well as Wrexham. “We look forward to building on these successes as we work towards hosting once again in 2026.”
