This term pupils in year 3 and 4 at Ysgol Min y Ddol have been learning about and becoming entrepreneurs, improving community links and use of the Welsh language in the process.
The pupils were given a small budget and were tasked with advertising and hosting a community coffee morning and school party.
Pupils advertised the coffee morning bilingually in the area, and as a result the event was well attended. Pupils took orders in Welsh, (and helped guests with their orders if they had little or no Welsh), played games, and had a pre prepared Welsh language music soundtrack playing throughout.
A couple of attendees were very impressed with the pupils work and stated-
“The children are a delight. They are polite and are using their Welsh to help us with ours. Thank you”
“I now understand what they mean on the X Factor when they say wow – this school has the wow factor, or should I say, X Factor. It’s wonderful”
The afternoon whole school party was also a hit with pupils having lots of fun. The pupils in Dosbarth Draenog approached a local business, Happy Hire, to get a quote on an inflatable bouncy castle for the afternoon, and in hearing the children and understanding their request, kindly donated the castle, free of charge, for the occasion.
Headteacher at Ysgol Min y Ddol, Mrs Claire Rainer said: “We’re all really proud of the pupil’s achievements. “They have successfully managed to make a profit of £217.89 which they can use as they wish – it is theirs after all! “Not only has the event generated a profit, it has also promoted the Welsh language within our community and strengthened the already established bond between Ysgol Min y Ddol and its community.”
