Wrexham Council has secured the purchase of St Mark’s Car Park for redevelopment.
The building is located just off Regent Street, near Island Green, and was a privately run multi-story car park until its closure in 2020.
The council’s aim is to redevelop the site to create better public access between Island Green, Regent Street and King Street, and to provide a facility for visiting coaches – helping to support the city’s growing tourism industry.
The redevelopment will support the nearby Wrexham Museum when it reopens later this year, as well as the new National Football Museum of Wales – which is forecast to attract up to 80,000 visitors annually
The project been split into three stages – acquisition (completed), exploration of options, and then the demolition and redevelopment of the site.
Councillor Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy, Business and Tourism, said: “Over the past few years we’ve seen some major regeneration projects in the city, including the High Street Townscape Heritage Scheme, the refurbishment of Wrexham’s indoor markets, and the Old Library in Queens Square being brought back into use.
“The purchase and development of the St Mark’s site will further develop our growing ambitions as a city.”
Councillor Paul Roberts, Lead Member for Partnerships, said: “With the nearby Wrexham Museum and football museum opening their doors this summer, this is a fantastic acquisition that will benefit both locals and visitors – creating better access to this part of the city.
“We also hope the redevelopment will reduce anti-social behaviour and unauthorised parking in the area – two issues that have been a concern since the carpark fell into disuse a few years ago.
“This is a really exciting project for Wrexham.”
