Ysgol Clywedog students Emanuela Merftova, Tai Hyland and Ruben Soares will very soon be heading to Denbigh Gliding based at Lleweni Parc Airfield.
They were awarded the scholarships after a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) trip to the airfield offered by the British Gliding Association who paid for a coach to take 30 pupils to the event.
After the event some pupils were invited to apply for the scholarship based on their active interest and involvement during the STEM sessions. The applications were considered by the BGA team and the three Ysgol Clywedog pupils were successful.
Each Scholarship is worth £500 and it can be used for flying and other activities directly related to becoming a glider pilot. The pupils will finish the scholarship by flying a glider SOLO!
Emanuela wants to be a commercial pilot. She is currently studying hard to help make her dream come true and is also an Air Cadet.
Ruben is also an Air Cadet and would love to be in the RAF. He is very knowledgeable about aeroplanes and is already studying his PTT which helps with flight training.
Tai is interested in engineering and really enjoyed the trip to Denbigh Airfield as a STEM experience. Being awarded this scholarship has opened his eyes to different aspects of engineering careers and hopefully given him a lifelong interest in flight.
Melissa Flanagan, Head of Science at Ysgol Clywedog said, “All three students are very excited to have been awarded these scholarships and are well on their way to achieving their ambitions. I wish them well and look forward to hearing all about it.”
