Wrexham Townscape Heritage Scheme has recently received an award from the Wrexham Civic Society with the society noting “The Townscape Heritage Scheme has seen a flurry of activity in and around the city centre with many building in the conservation area seeing restoration and renewal. The scheme has brought buildings back into use, secured and extended their use, and enhanced the built environment.”

Examples of completed projects within the scheme are

  • Henblas Street: Refurbishments at numbers 2-10 and 38, including converting first floors into apartments.
  • Hope Street: Restoration of buildings like 58, 58a, and 59, bringing former derelict upper floors back into use as apartments.
  • Wrexham Indoor Markets: (Link here to Jess’ blog piece).

The building refurbishment funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund via the Townscape Heritage Scheme has improved the character of the area, generated employment opportunities, improved the city centre accommodation offering as well as provided the opportunity to better utilise prominent city centre buildings.

The regeneration works have been carried out in a way that complements and enhances the local heritage and traditional buildings in the city centre.

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy, said “We’ve been very successful in Wrexham over the past few years in securing external funding to help improve the look and functionality of the city centre and buildings within the conservation area. “It’s great to see that the successes of the Townscape Heritage Scheme have been acknowledged with an award from the Wrexham Civic Society. “Work will continue towards our ambitions to make the city centre an exciting and vibrant destination for both Wrexham residents and visitors.”
