In the last couple of weeks, Cllr David A Bithell, deputy leader of Wrexham Council, has had positive discussions with Wrexham, Shropshire & Midlands Railway (WSMR) to make the proposed direct rail service between Wrexham and London Euston even better for Wrexham residents and visitors.
The current proposal is in the consultation period, and has the following three changes to the original application:
- three (options for a fourth) daily return trips Wrexham to London Euston
- two additional station calls (Wellington and Darlaston)
- uses spare capacity not utilised by other operators
Additional suggestions discussed at a recent meeting with WSMR included potential discounted rates for Wrexham AFC season ticket holders and council staff.
Cllr David A Bithell said: “My recent meetings with WSMR have been very positive. As well as changes to the original proposals we have discussed discounted rates that will make the route more appealing and popular.
“We are now pushing ahead to make this a reality for Wrexham as a place and a new city. The time is right for new and improved transport, and these proposals are at no cost to the taxpayer. We urge business groups and residents to support our bid.”
If given the go-ahead, it’s estimated that this new line would deliver £9 million a year in economic benefit between Walsall, Shrewsbury and Wrexham and has options for a 5- or 7-year contract, depending on approval.
