Wrexham Council has recently reviewed its capital programme of investments, and – following an Executive Board meeting last month – has allocated an extensive amount of funding for infrastructure maintenance.
Councillor Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council confirmed: “Following the Executive Board meeting in July, I’m pleased to confirm that we are investing additional funds in maintaining our infrastructure.
“This year we have allocated over £5m for much-needed maintenance of our roads, both strategic and community networks, footways, highway structures, traffic signals, street lighting and vehicle restraint systems.
“This investment will help us improve the deteriorating condition of our infrastructure and whilst acknowledging the financial challenges all public services face, in Wrexham we have been able to tackle some of our maintenance backlog.
“We acknowledge that we need to provide a consistent funding allocation to support our work in this area and continue to lobby the Welsh Government for realistic funding allocations.”
Councillor Terry Evans, Lead Member for Environment, said: “I’m really pleased with the funding injection we’ve been able to provide as a council and welcome the contribution from Welsh Government with the re-introduction of the Local Government Borrowing funding, which has allowed officers to supplement this investment with a total of over £4m additional funds over the next two years.
“Given the scale of investment this year, officers have developed a two-phased programme and I am pleased that we have our contractors geared up to commence operations in earnest on our first phase of this year’s planned works.
“Whilst this work is being delivered, officers will continue to work on the second phase currently anticipated to run from the autumn through to the end of this financial year.”
The first phase of the infrastructure works programme will commence over the summer and details of the planned works can be found on the council’s website.
