Last week, plans regarding Cost of Living support was unveiled at Wrexham Council’s Executive Board.
Plans included utilising grants via the Welsh Local Government Association, which will allow Wrexham Council to contribute £60,000 directly to Wrexham Foodbank this year and £60,000 next year.
The funding will be donated directly to the foodbank, which provides food and toiletry products to those in need.
This year, Wrexham Council will allocate £40,000 in local food partnership funding, which will also support the Wrexham Food Partnership Small Grants Programme ahead of Christmas. The same contribution is planned for 2026/27.
This work will be managed by Wrexham Council’s externally-funded Food Development Officer.
Wrexham Council has established a Cost of Living Working Group which is cross party group of members and officers who regularly meet to explore and develop solutions to support residents facing financial pressures.
Work to develop solutions and support people in need is already existing across the Council.
For example, in Housing, each Estate Office has a Financial Inclusion Officer who support social housing residents to maxmise their income and manage rent payments with ease.
Financial inclusion officers work within the community to provide support. An example of this is by attending ‘warm hubs’ to offer advice, by holding specific financial advice sessions, working directly with individuals (council contract holders) and more.

Between 1 April 2024 and 10 March 2025, financial inclusion officers issued 550 foodbank vouchers to Council Housing residents. This highlights the value of the approved grant, which will directly benefit those referred to the foodbank for support.
Many more individuals, both within and beyond social housing, continue to rely on foodbank support, highlighting the ongoing demand for this vital service
Executive Board approved the Wrexham Poverty Action Collaboration (WPAC Pledge) which is committed to collaborate with WPAC and the Financial Justice Working Group to support people with lived experience of poverty, identify financial barriers in Wrexham, and raise awareness through dialogue and social media.
Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Housing and Climate Change and is also the Chair of the Cost of Living Working Group said, “We are pleased to have this opportunity to extend our support across the Borough, regarding Cost of Living.
We already have ways in which we offer support to those facing a Cost of Living Crisis, but this is a great step forward in providing money directly to the food banks, work is vital to supporting those in need.”
If you’re living in Council Housing and finding it difficult to manage your rent payments, we’re here to support you. Please reach out to your local estate office.
