Wrexham Council’s Housing department have completed another refurbishment of their sheltered housing stock.

A significant investment of approximately 21.6 million has funded the success of four refurbishments to the Sheltered Housing stock over the last few years. Sheltered Housing refurbishments have now been completed in Llay (Tir y Capel), Rhos (Llys y Mynydd), Coedpoeth (Maes y Capel), with the latest being in Wisteria Court, Wrexham.

There was also grant funding across the refurbishments of around 1 million to support measures such as triple glazed windows and air source heat pumps.

The latest refurbishment (Wisteria Court, Wrexham) provides 26warm, energy-efficient and comfortable homes, which allows independent living for the older generation.

Wisteria Court offers a homely environment that offers a spacious and modern communal area, and landscaped gardens which encourages socialising to aim to reduce isolation.

All refurbished units are level accessed throughout, with an improved layout for easier mobility for those who use scooters.

A contract holder from the recently refurbished Maes y Capel said, “I am over the moon and I absolutely love my new home. I was a bit dubious when I was told it was going to be open plan, but I got used to it straight away and I love it. The warden service is really helpful and everyone involved has been amazing.”

Energy efficiency has been taken into account with the installation of Air Source Heat Pumps and triple glazed windows. Air source heat pumps offer a consistent and comfortable heat for all seasons, with potential long term cost savings.

All four refurbishments have adhered to a consistent design, with all construction work undertaken by Read Construction.

Alex Read, Director of Read Construction said, “Delivered through the North Wales Construction Partnership, the refurbishment of Wisteria Court reflects our commitment to building high-quality, future-ready homes that serve the needs of the community.

“By incorporating sustainable technologies and creating accessible, sociable spaces, we’ve helped transform the site into a safe, modern environment that supports independent living and strengthens community connections.

“Wrexham Council is a valued repeat client, and we’re pleased to have worked with them once again to deliver a project that makes a real difference to residents’ lives.”

Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Housing and Climate Change said “We are thrilled to reveal our fourth refurbishment of our Sheltered Housing stock in collaboration with Reads Construction. This significant investment has resulted in four high-quality refurbishments which support independent living for older people. I look forward to seeing residents settle into their newly modernised homes, in Wisteria Court.”

Having viewed the recently refurbished sheltered housing unit Wisteria Court, Councillor Phil Wynn for Brynyffynnon said, “the bright, modernised one and two bedroom flats, along with the welcoming communal lounge and terraced garden will, I’m sure provide the right balance of privacy along with space for social connection for the future twenty-six contract holders.

“The investment in this project by WCBCs Housing Department is a clear commitment to supporting older members of our community with quality housing and care. I look forward to the official opening day to hear the views of the contract holders.”

Would you or someone you know benefit from Sheltered Housing Accommodation?

It isn’t the same as a residential or nursing home, and each tenant has their own separate unfurnished flat, bedsit or bungalow with the support of a warden, and an opportunity for socialisation in the communal areas.

You could be eligible for sheltered housing if you’re over 60 years old. If you’re over 55 and have a “demonstrated support need” you may be able to apply as well.

Sheltered housing could be right for you if you…

  • Want to keep your independence, but would like the peace of mind provided by having a professional support service available when needed
  • Enjoy mixing with other people when you wish
  • Currently live in accommodation that is too big for your needs
