Wrexham Council’s ambitious refurbishment of the Butchers’ and General Markets has been recognised with a commendation at the Wrexham Civic Society Awards, that took place in November.

Following a £4m investment, traders returned to the transformed markets for their re-opening in November 2024. The project has created a bright, welcoming space that brings together the best of Wrexham’s market tradition with modern facilities for today’s shoppers and businesses.

The regenerated markets now offer an inviting environment for established traders while also attracting new businesses into the heart of the city centre. Great care has been taken to preserve the character and heritage that have made the Butchers’ and General Markets cornerstones of local life, while ensuring they are fit for the future.

In making the commendation, Wrexham Civic Society highlighted the attention to the building fabric, the installation of modern ventilation and services, and the opening up of parts of the Butchers’ Market that had been out of use for decades.

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy, Business and Tourism, said: “Our markets are part of Wrexham’s identity, and this project was about respecting that history while making sure the buildings work for today’s traders and customers.

Seeing parts of the Butchers’ Market brought back into use after so many years has been particularly rewarding.

This recognition reflects the care, collaboration and commitment that went into the project, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of UK and Welsh Government funding, National Lottery players, and the dedication of our officers and project partners.”

The commendation highlights Wrexham Council’s commitment to investing in the city’s historic buildings while supporting an ever-changing local economy. The refurbished markets provide a revitalised, flexible environment that can continue to evolve, supporting local businesses and ensuring these much-loved buildings remain an integral part of Wrexham’s exciting future.
