Gold for Wrexham

It’s official, Wrexham has been awarded gold in the 2024 Wales in Bloom competition.

The competition’s message ‘Helping Communities Grow’ encourages community support in order to improve the local environment.

Cllr Nigel Williams, Lead Member for Economy and Regeneration said “It’s great that for the second year running, the county wide team efforts have been acknowledged with a gold award from Wales in Bloom.

“Having won gold last year we were invited to represent Wales at Britain in Bloom where we are up against London and Dundee. “We will know the results of that competition in the near future-but for now it’s great to see the staff and volunteers hard work come to fruition.”

Judges tour

The judges had a tour of Wrexham to showcase what is happening across the county, as well as the City Centre.

Their tour started in Coedpoeth with a natural wildlife front garden.

Then on to Pentrebychan Nursery where we have just refurbished and built new polytunnels, improving our sustainable growing credentials.

Residents in Bradley showcased their communal and formal gardens.

From there judges proceeded to the FCC Recycling Centre to have a talk on recycling rates and other environmental projects.

Judges were greeted at the Erlas Walled Garden by users and volunteers from the project for a tour of the site.

The school gardening club at Rhosnesni High School showcased their green finger credentials with their impressive vegetable and sensory gardens.

During the City Centre visit judges spoke to Wrexham Council Chief Executive Ian Bancroft, Leader Cllr Mark Pritchard, Deputy Leader David Bithell, as well as Wrexham Mayor Cllr Beryl Blackmore

The tour ended at Tŷ Pawb where judges met a team from Wrexham Litter Pickers, council trainees and other members of the Environment team.

Judges feedback

“We were incredibly pleased to both see and hear about the broad spectrum of volunteering opportunities that allow residents to be actively involved in caring for their local greenspace.

“Wrexham’s commitment to environmental responsibility is clearly documented in your portfolio. Well done!

“The Wrexham recycling statistics as presented by FCC Environment are indeed impressive, it was good to hear about the types and numbers of events being organised to encourage the residents and businesses in Wrexham to recycle further.

“It was good to meet your litter picking volunteers and hear about the amounts of litter that they are collecting regularly.

“We are delighted to award Wrexham in Bloom a GOLD and the 2024 Wales in Bloom City Category Award. Many congratulations! Llongyfarchiadau lu!”
