Lenka Mbaye, a pupil from Borras Community Primary School in Wrexham, was recently crowned as Overall Winner in Show Racism The Red Card’s Creative Competition after her fantastic poem ‘Racism Everywhere’ wowed the judges.

Lenka is now waiting to receive her prize of a brand-new iPad for winning the Wales-wide competition. After cancelling the original awards ceremony, as a surprise to the winners and runners-ups, an online ceremony was hosted on Wednesday, May 6 instead.

Show Racism The Red Card is a leading anti-racism educational charity in the UK and Wales and worked directly with over 22,000 young people from across Wales in 2019.

Here’s a short extract from Lenka’s powerful poem, Racism Everywhere:

“Different cultures and races mix really well
But sadly, at first glance you might not tell
Everyone deserves a proper chance
So please don’t judge them at first glance”

You can read Lenka’s poem in its entirety on the Show Racism The Red Card website.

One of Lenka’s teachers at Borras CP, Mr David Roberts said: “We are all so very proud of what Lenka has achieved this year. At Borras Park Primary School we always support this competition and all the children are involved in at least one of the categories. For Lenka to win her category is an amazing achievement.

“To be crowned the overall winner of the competition makes me immensely proud. Treating everyone with respect is part of our whole school ethos and the children know how important it is to always be ‘ready, respectful and safe’. Hopefully lockdown will make us all have a rethink about how we treat other people. Well done Lenka!”

In a recorded video message to Lenka, Ian Bancroft, our Chief Executive, said: “I just wanted to say congratulations for your great achievement in the Show Racism The Red Card competition. For you to be Overall Winner in the Creative Competition is particularly great for me, as I’m a big fan of poetry and it’s great that you’ve expressed your views within that form. We hope our words and messages go someway towards recognising your achievement.”

Ian Roberts, Chief Officer for Education and Early Intervention, added: “I just want to say a few words of thanks for your excellent poem in the Show Racism The Red Card competition. I’ve read your poem and I’m highly impressed with the many rhyming couplets that you’ve used in your poetry. Also, a big thank you goes to Borras Park Community Primary School for allowing Lenka and other pupils to take part in the competition.”
