Will we be ready for electric vehicles by 2030?

Electric vehicles have hit the news again following the announcement that all new cars and vans powered by petrol and diesel will not be sold in the UK from 2030. Some hybrid vehicles will still be allowed.

What does this mean for us here in Wrexham?

Well, we’re already on our way to putting in place the necessary infrastructure for electric vehicle (EV) charging in our depots, public car parks and country parks and we’re planning to do more.

Protect the people you love. Download the Covid-19 NHS app.

They’re already installed in Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Ty Mawr, Ty Pawb, Waterworld, Alyn Waters, Abbey Road, Ruthin Road, Lambpit Street, Redwither Tower, Guildhall, Llay Resource Centre, Plas Pentwyn, Bersham Enterprise Centre, Glyn Ceiriog Community Centre.

And will soon be installed in Chirk car park which will be an ultra rapid charging station – thought to be the first in N.Wales and the first owned by a local authority, and Ruabon train station.

But we’ll be doing a lot more in the coming months and years to make sure we can keep up with the demand and deliver a sustainable and efficient infrastructure for residents, visitors and businesses.

More important than ever to install Electctric Charging Points

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “It’s now more important than ever to move forward our plans to continue installing EV Charging points across the county borough. Ten years is not a long time and it’s clear that some drivers and companies are already using electric vehicles. In order to meet the expected increase in demand in the coming years we need to take decisions now in order to deliver and meet motorists’ expectations.

“Whilst plans can always be revised and amended to take into account different trends we need a solid plan now to meet expectations. That’s why we’re asking you to take part in our Decarbonisation Action Plan consultation – which includes plans for EV charging points. Please take a few minutes to help us get this plan right and to ensure the infrastructure is in place and sustainable for future generations.”
