On Wednesday, January 27, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is asking every household across the UK to light a candle in their window, to remember victims of the Holocaust and recent genocides.

“Never forget the horrors”“HMD is for everyone”

The ‘Lighting the Darkness’ event takes place on the international Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2021 and looks to shine a light against any hatred and division today.

People are being asked to light their candle at 8pm, following on from the virtual HMD 2021 UK Ceremony, which is being streamed online. The ceremony commences at 7pm, and anyone who would like to watch can register to do so by clicking here.

“Never forget the horrors”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “It’s so important that we never forget the horrors of the Holocaust, in which six million people were killed, and also the terrible genocides that have happened since in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

“The Lighting the Darkness event is a safe way we can show our remembrance of these tragedies from home. People will be lighting candles and displaying in their windows all across the UK at 8pm on Holocaust Memorial Day and we encourage Wrexham residents to join in.

“We are proud to be a very diverse town, and we will always stand up to inequality and inhumanity in all its forms.”

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council, said: “It is important to remember both the victims and the survivors of the holocaust. We must also remember those lost in recent genocide and make sure we never forget. I would encourage you to take part in Lighting the Darkness; it is by reminding ourselves of events of the past that we can work towards ensuring history doesn’t repeat itself.”

“HMD is for everyone”

The Holocaust Memorial Trust says: “The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation, and genocide must still be resisted every day. Our world often feels fragile and vulnerable and we cannot be complacent. Even in the UK, prejudice and the language of hatred exist and must be challenged by us all.

“HMD is for everyone. Each year across the UK, people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future. We know they learn more and empathise more as a result.”
