Thinking of having a barbecue? Please remember to recycle

As we’re well into spring, and with summer not too far away, some of us will be thinking about – or may even have already started – having barbecues in our back gardens…but when you do, please don’t forget about recycling.

  • Need a reminder of what can go in your food caddy?

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said, “Restrictions in Wales currently allow up to six people from up to six households to meet outdoors with social distancing and hygiene measures in place, including in private gardens. So the possibility of enjoying food outside with family and friends is very appealing after not being able to do so for many months.

“But if you’re going to be having barbecues in the near future, it’s important to remember to recycle. Just because food is cooked and eaten outside, this doesn’t mean we should treat it or its packaging any differently. We’re asking people to be mindful that there’s lots of things from your barbecue that can be recycled.”

Make sure you know about changes to Covid-19 restrictions in Wales

Leftovers

For starters, all uneaten food can be recycled. A good tip is to take your caddy outside and pop any bones and leftovers in as you go along. It makes cleaning up afterwards much easier – just make sure you keep the lid shut when you’re not using it to avoid any pesky flies.

Also, do you use wooden skewers for your kebabs? Because something you mightn’t know is that these can be recycled as food waste in your caddy, as can all wooden cutlery!

Out of caddy liners?

Not to worry, we’ve been providing FREE caddy liners for an ongoing period now.

Anyone in need of a new roll can just tie an empty liner to their caddy handle on their next collection day and the recycling crew will leave you a new roll free of charge.

And don’t forget, if you need a new food caddy you can order one for free on our website.

Meat trays

With barbecues there’s usually a lot of plastic meat trays involved, and in Wrexham all plastic meat trays can be recycled.

Just make sure there’s no food residue on them when you recycle them…this is very important. It doesn’t take long – a quick rinse or wash in used dishwater usually does the trick – and this means it gets recycled into a much better quality product.

Need a reminder of what can go in your food caddy?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. As well as everything you will already know about, take a look at this list some of the foods you mightn’t necessarily think of, such as:

• Out of date foods
• Bones and carcasses
• Egg shells
• Banana peelings (and other peelings)
• Apple cores
• Coffee granules
• Raw foods
• Mouldy foods
• Plate scrapings
• Uneaten ready meals
• Fast food (e.g. chips and pizzas)
• Shellfish

As always, thanks for recycling and doing your bit for Wrexham 🙂
