A recent bid for £30 million to the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund could see long awaited improvements to the Wrexham to Bidston Line taking passengers to and from the North West of England.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “The rail network serves the needs of local businesses, people and communities. We as a Council have long campaigned and lobbied for improvements to this line which supports our Future of Rail document agreed at the councils Executive Board.

“Our aim is to see a 30 minute service along this route along with other routes which could now be closer than ever, hopefully in the December timetable. We will continue to our pursue all our Rail aspirations to support better integration between bus and rail and reduce the carbon footprint.”

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council and Chair of the Mersey Dee Alliance, said, “I welcome this funding bid which will see good connectivity to the rail network and frequent services to key local, regional and national destinations. All are essential to help stimulate and drive economic growth in Wrexham and the surrounding areas.

“It is essential that we work together across the Mersey Dee Alliance to help support and drive the economy in Wrexham.”

This is the third bid to the Levelling Up Fund that has been made to the UK government with the economic prosperity of Wrexham at its heart.

Executive Board last week approved two bids to the fund for improvements to the Racecourse and at the World Heritage site at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
