A joint operation aimed at ensuring the safety of vehicles on our roads was carried out in December by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), North Wales Police and Wrexham Council Licensing Department.

Officers checked numerous vehicles in the Wrexham area and took action where defects were found. These included advice or warnings to drivers for issues such as faulty lights to taking vehicles off the road for serious matters.

The Licensing Department also conducted checks on taxis and drivers in order to ensure the safety of customers – an initiative that was welcomed by the taxi trade.

David Collings, Head of Enforcement Delivery at DVSA said, “Taxis and private hire vehicles play a critical role in keeping our country moving, allowing people to travel safely and easily. Many people in our communities, particularly those who are disabled and vulnerable, rely on them.

“It was reassuring to see that the majority of the taxi operators and drivers in the Wrexham area took their obligations seriously to provide safe and roadworthy vehicles – with only a small number of vehicles falling short of the standards required.

Councillor Terry Evans, Lead Member for Planning and Public Protection, said “ Partnership work on these issues was very valuable, especially during the busy festive period. It gives the people of Wrexham  confidence that safety and regulation of drivers and vehicles is being checked in order to enhance safety on our roads.”
