International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is the largest education initiative of the compost industry and this year it runs from Sunday, May 5 until Saturday, May 11.

Throughout the week of ICAW, events are held all over the world with many different activities taking place that encourage and celebrate all types of composting, from backyard to large–scale.

As part of ICAW, our waste strategy and open spaces teams will be at Acton Park on Thursday, May 9 between 11am – 2pm, where they will have a stall near the sweet chestnut tree which was crowned the winner of UK Tree of the Year 2023.

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Environment, said: “We’re pleased to add our support to International Compost Awareness Week, and our officers will be on hand to chat about composting, hand out seeds and give information on recycling. Compostable liners for food caddies will be available as well, so feel free to pop over if you can.”

Make soil improver – and collect it for free!

Did you know your food waste and garden waste in Wrexham is used to create soil improver, which is available for residents to collect at the three recycling centres throughout the year?

So if you’re not already recycling your food waste, why not start recycling your leftovers and turn it into something useful? And then when you need to do a bit of gardening you can come and collect some free soil improver. Sounds like a good idea, huh?

It’s not too late to join the garden waste collection service

This year, the garden waste collection service was extended to run until February 2025, and if you haven’t already joined it’s not too late to subscribe.

The service costs is £35 per green bin per year, and runs from the date you sign up until February 28, 2025, so it’s better to sign up sooner rather than later to get the best value.

If you sign up now, you can still get around 10 months of collections, whereas if you left it for a further month before signing up, you’d only get 9 months collections for the same price. It’s better to sign up now and get more collections for your money.
