Do you know if you are eligible for free school transport?

If your child is of reception age and above and their school is the closest one to your home, but is more than 3 miles away from your home address for secondary schools, or two miles for primary schools, you may be able to have free school transport for your child.

An exception can be made if your child will be attending a Welsh medium or faith school, and the chosen school isn’t the nearest to their home address. In both cases free transport is only available if your child lives over the minimum distance from the school.

If you are eligible, you can apply via the school transport application form on our website.

For those looking to make an application for free school transport ready for this September 2025, the cut-off for applications is May 31, 2025. Any applications received after this date may not be guaranteed transport ready for the start of term in September.

Cllr Phil Wynn, lead member for education, said: “If you think your child is entitled to free school transport, please contact the school transport team. While the cost of living continues to rise this is one of the ways that families can receive help towards costs associated with education. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents to check if they are eligible for the school essentials grant by taking a look at the council’s webpage.”

For more information, you can have a look at the council’s school transport policy or email the school transport team at school.transport@wrexham.gov.uk.
