Homes and businesses – grants for a new boiler

Up to £7,500 could be yours to put towards a new, more efficient, low carbon boiler or heating system.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) supports the decarbonisation of homes, and small and medium non-domestic buildings in England and Wales. It provides upfront grants of up to £7,500 to encourage property owners to replace existing fossil fuel heating with a low carbon alternative.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, there are grants for air or ground source heat pumps, or a biomass boiler.

The aim of this scheme is to incentivise and increase the use of low carbon heating while also supporting this industry to increase the number of homes and businesses using heat pumps, supporting the industry to reduce their cost.

To apply for the grant you will need to choose an installer who is certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) (a standards organisation to ensure the quality of the work), who will then apply for the grant on your behalf and deduct the value of the grant from your invoice.

Cllr David A Bithell, lead member for housing and climate change, said: “If you are looking to change your current fossil fuel powered heating system, I would encourage you to look at these low carbon options and take advantage of these grants. These newer systems can be more expensive to install, but are far cheaper to run so this help with the upfront installation costs is a really good scheme. Don’t worry if you’ve received separate funding for energy efficiency upgrades such as insulation, doors or windows already, you can still apply for this grant.”

The full criteria, list of certified installers, eligibility criteria and more details of the application process are available on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme page of the UK Government website.
