Every year, each incoming Mayor nominates charities to raise money for throughout their term of office. They do this through various fundraising events during their mayoral year.

Our current Mayor, Councillor Jeremy Kent, has chosen Andy’s Man Club and We Mind The Gap as his charities.

In addition to his chosen charities, the Mayor is determined to do something a little bit extra. He is aiming to train 1000 people in first aid in between his Mayoral duties.

In addition to his mayoral role and work commitments outside the council, Cllr Kent is a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer in the Air Cadets. Over the years in his voluntary role, he has trained cadets in a wide range of skills, including first aid.

He believes it is important that everyone has some basic understanding of first aid as you never know when the need to use these skills can happen.

With this in mind, Cllr Kent thought he could incorporate this into his mayoral duties and he aims to go out into the community of Wrexham and deliver first aid training to residents.

From schools to community groups, everyone is welcome to take part in his training sessions, and he is delivering them free of charge.

The Mayor has already made great progress with his endeavours as he started his first aid sessions with the pupils of St Paul’s school. There are already many more booked in with a variety of community groups in and around the city.

Speaking about his ambitions for the project, the Mayor said “First aid is a vital skill that I believe we should all have some grasp of, even on a basic level. We just don’t know when someone will need medical assistance and I believe it is important to be ready for those unexpected scenarios.

“I hope to achieve my goal in getting 1000 people in our community trained and ready to be able to step in and offer care and support to a family member, a friend, a stranger, anybody in their time of need.

“I encourage everyone to come along and join one of the many sessions I have planned or to get in touch if they want to organise a session with me. All are welcome and I really look forward to, hopefully, making a positive difference within our community together”.
