The eagerly anticipated Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum will open its doors for the first time in two weeks, it has been announced.
With one half of the museum celebrating the diverse heritage of football in Wales – from grassroots to national team – the other focusses on Wrexham’s rich history, from its past as a mining area to more modern times, which have shaped the town to be the place it is today.
The museum will open at 10am on Friday, September 25, 2026. Free tickets are required for entry and can be booked through www.wrexhammuseum.wales from midday on Monday, September 14 – timeslots are limited so early booking to secure a preferred day and time is essential.
Visiting the museum as part of a special preview event and marking the official launch of the free entry tickets, the Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport, Heledd Fychan, said:
“Having been lucky enough to visit today, I can’t wait to see this landmark attraction open to the public later this month. It brings our nation’s footballing heritage to life whilst also celebrating the rich history and the communities who call Wrexham home. Each exhibit and each story told are an important part of our national story, and there’s so much for visitors to enjoy and learn.
“I’d encourage everyone – from Wrexham, from Wales and from wherever they live in the world – to come and experience this superb museum of two halves for themselves.”
Cllr Mark Pritchard, leader of Wrexham Council, said: “The opening of the Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum has been highly anticipated, and this event was a great opportunity to thank all the funders before opening the doors to the public later this month.
“Everyone at the museum has put years of hard work into designing and developing the interactive and immersive content within the new layout. The involvement of local communities in curating the object displays has been a remarkable achievement. Positive feedback from the minister and other guests will be greatly appreciated by all. I would personally like to thank the staff, once again, for their dedication to this project and I look forward to seeing visitors to the museum making the most of this attraction in the city centre.”
The impressive new attraction offers residents and visitors to the region an exciting destination to include in their recreation and travel plans.
Cllr Paul Roberts, lead member with responsibility for museums, said: “I would encourage everyone who lives locally to book their tickets straight away, come and be among the first to see your new museum. There is so much to enjoy here and something for everyone, whether your interests lie in the football community or you are drawn to local history. The café overlooking the forecourt is a great place to rest during your visit.”
Everyone is welcome to the new museum, our visitor experience assistants and volunteers will be on hand to guide you through the building. People who knew the original museum will be astonished to see how much the County Buildings has changed, and how much more there is to see and explore.
