Biggest cultural event in Europe heading to Wrexham

Between 2nd and 9th of August 2025 the biggest festival of its kind in Europe will be hosted in Wrexham!

The National Eisteddfod, or Eisteddfod Genedlaethol in Cymraeg is a celebration of Welsh Culture and language…and with that in mind we’ll be using a few words in Cymraeg – but have put a handy translation of these words at the bottom of this article.

Although the Eisteddfod is in August, there’s still plenty to do and get involved with over the next few months…

Cymrwch rhan – Get involved

The role of the National Eisteddfod is to give a boost to Welsh Culture and language in the area that it visits. We can all be a part of this. One of the simplest ways to get involved is using the Cymraeg you have. If you go on holiday to Spain or France it’s perfectly normal to finish a conversation or transaction with ‘gracias’ or ‘merci’, but we don’t always think about  using ‘diolch’ in our part of Wales. If we all used ‘diolch’ just once a day in Wrexham – that would be about 135,000 uses of Cymraeg in a day or almost a million uses in a week-just with one word! Imagine what that figure would look like if we used a few more words in Cymraeg. Rhowch cynnig arni > Give it a go!

If you’re a business in Wrexham the advantages of using a little Cymraeg in anticipation of and during the Eisteddfod either in person or online will be a huge benefit in attracting custom from one of the many visitors to the region next year. Pontypridd hosted last August and the event attracted 186,000 people-hugely benefitting the local economy.

The Eisteddfod is funded from various sources, but one of the most important revenue streams is through local fundraising groups in the host area. In Wrexham the groups have been separated by geographical location, as well as an overall Digwyddiadau Eisteddfod Wrexham Events page. We encourage everyone to sign up to their local area and get involved! It’s a great way to engage, or re-engage with your local community.

Other engagement opportunities and projects will be announced by the Eisteddfod in due course as well as volunteering opportunities on the maes. Joining your local Facebook group will be a great way of keeping up to date – you can also sign up for email updates and receive regular updates direct to your email account.

Llinos Roberts, Chair of the Wrecsam Eisteddfod Executive Committee said “The time leading up to Wrecsam Eisteddfod will offer ample opportunities for everyone to get involved with events and fundraising within your community-whilst engaging with the Welsh Language and culture. “Living so close to the border, Wrexham is fiercely Welsh and Welcoming. “Let’s use the Eisteddfod visit as a great opportunity to grow our Welsh identity within Wrecsam.”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Welsh Language Champion at Wrexham Council said “The National Eisteddfod has something for everyone. “Visiting the Maes in August will be a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in Welsh Culture, whether you speak lots of Welsh, or none at all. “Get involved and make the most of this very special time in Wrexham.”
