We have identified five areas of Wrexham to undergo a number of carbon lowering measures which local residents are encouraged to get involved with as part our plans to support nature and cut carbon emissions across the county borough.

The five ‘low carbon communities’ which have been identified are Offa, Cefn Mawr, Rhos, Rhosddu and Caia Park. They can each receive up to £10,000 to develop initiatives to encourage behaviour change and lower emissions in their local area.

Each of the five communities are now putting together steering groups which will work to decide and implement the most impactful measures that residents will want to play their part in to mitigate climate change.

“Positive initiatives that people can get involved with”

Cllr David A Bithell, Climate Champion, said: “We’re pleased to have identified the five communities and we’ll be working closely alongside them over the coming months to help them to introduce measures that will support nature and help to reduce carbon emissions. A significant amount of money has been made available for this project so that the communities will have the funds needed to deliver really positive initiatives that people can get involved with.”

“Build strong communities”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Environment, said: “To further support the five communities, we will introduce them to opportunities for training and upskilling as well. This project will encourage a behaviour change in the communities that can be long-lasting against the harmful impacts of climate change and carbon emissions. We really hope this work will help to build strong communities who are committed to looking after and preserving their local environment.”

Engagement events – get involved

We now need your help to bring these plans to life!

Cefn Mawr had a community engagement session at Ebenezer Chapel on May 20 and we’re now looking for people who can help us to further develop plans for this community. If you would like to get involved, please email decarbonisation@wrexham.gov.uk

There are further upcoming sessions in the five communities where members from our climate change and carbon reduction team will be on hand to answer any questions you have, and you’ll be able to discuss how you can get involved with the project.

The next session to take place is at Rhosddu’s family fun day at Rhosddu Park on Saturday, June 10 (12.00pm-6.00pm). Residents can give their ideas to our team and you can also let us know us know if you would like to be further involved in the project.

Offa will hold its first engagement session on Saturday, July 1 (10.00am-2.00pm) at Parciau Community Centre with our team and other local stakeholders available to take thoughts and ideas regarding climate measures from residents.

Rhos will have also have a session on Saturday, July 1 from 10.00am-2.00pm which takes place at Rhos Community Centre.

There’s also an Environmental Day taking place at the Caia Park Partnership on Prince Charles Road from 10.30am-4.00pm on Saturday, July 1. Our team will be busy at Offa and Rhos, but there will be plenty of great activities for residents, including a repair café.

Caia Park has its first engagement session on Tuesday, July 11 from 3.45pm-5.45pm at Hafod y Wern School on Deva Way.

There are many ways for people to get involved and help us develop ideas to take action! If you want to get involved or find out more please contact us by emailing decarbonisation@wrexham.gov.uk
