Grab a Sweet Treat on Charles Street

As part of our tour of independent town centre traders we visited “Just Desserts” on Charles Street to see how trade is going.

Just walking into the shop you can smell the sweet treats that await the customer from Harry Potter inspired pancake stacks with Butter Beer to ice cream filled doughnuts – the menu board on the wall is a treat to read never mind sample and you can treat a family of four for just £10.00 if you’re watching the pennies

Carl and Sarah Hughes opened their shop last November and they have now expanded into going to events and seem to have a bright future ahead of them.  They have just secured a contract to serve their treats at the Crusaders matches that take place at Queensway.  They also attended the last Rock the Park in Marchwiel and find themselves at one event or another most weekends.

Sarah, said:

“It’s great here on Charles Street as everyone is very friendly and we do help one another out.  I can’t say it’s not hard work though and to be successful we have to put in the hours and be prepared to work hard.  We work six days a week but it’s worth it, people seem to like our desserts and we certainly enjoy making them.”

Their customer base is extremely wide with one customer hailing from Australia and others from Liverpool and Manchester.  Although at a recent event the customer from Liverpool was actually trading next to Just Desserts and was somewhat embarrassed to be found stealing their recipe ideas.  Turned out they had been on a spying mission and liked what they saw.

“Business Wales were a great help”

We asked what support they had had in setting up their business and Carl was very quick to acknowledge the help of Business Wales in the early days – “Business Wales were a great help they ran a course in Redwither on the Industrial Estate and it was excellent.  Quite a few of us from that course have gone on to establish our own business.  I’d encourage anyone thinking of running a business – even if they don’t know what they want to do – to get in touch with them as they were really supportive.

The Council’s Food Safety Department also came in for praise as they called in them very early in the process.  They had been prepared to make a lot of alterations to the kitchen area to bring it up to standard but it turned out it didn’t need it – with minor adjustments it now has the highest rating of 5.
