Guest article – Ambition North Wales

Ambition North Wales is proud to announce that the North Wales Regional Transport Plan has been formally approved by Ken Skates MS, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales. This marks a significant step forward in delivering a safe, sustainable, affordable, and integrated transport network across the region.

Developed by Ambition North Wales – as the region’s Corporate Joint Committee (CJC), in partnership with local authorities, Transport for Wales and Welsh Government, the Plan sets out a bold vision to improve connectivity, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and support inclusive economic growth.

The Plan outlines strategic policies and interventions until 2030 across various modes of transport, including active travel. It aims to ensure North Wales will have a safe, sustainable, affordable, resilient, and effective integrated transport network – that supports economic growth, prosperity for all and promotes inclusivity and well-being.

The delivery of schemes by local authorities in North Wales will begin in April 2026, with monitoring and review led by the CJC’s Transport Sub-Committee.

Councillor David A Bithell,Chair of the Corporate Joint Committee’s Transport Sub-Committee, said: “This is a landmark moment for North Wales. The approved Plan reflects the needs in our communities and the ambition to create a transport system that works for everyone—whether you’re commuting, running a business, accessing essential services, or visiting our beautiful region.

“The plan sets out aspirations consistent with national policy, outlined in the Wales Transport Strategy, and the Network North Wales vision. Ambition North Wales will provide a regional co-ordinated approach to the development of an integrated strategic transport service for the region.”

Councillor Glyn Banks, Committee Vice-chair, added: “Approval of this Plan reflects a shared commitment to delivering a transport system that is not only fit for the future, but also fair, green and accessible. This is about connecting people and places in ways that support wellbeing, opportunity and sustainability across North Wales.”

The Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, said: “The approval of the Regional Transport Plans is a big step forward for greater collaboration across our regions in Wales. Regional Transport Plans set out policies for the implementation by local transport authorities of Llwybr Newydd, our transport strategy, in each region of Wales. We will provide funding to help deliver the plans through our new Regional Transport Fund. This will ensure that the investment we make in transport is adapted to the needs of each region and informed by those who know the region best. I look forward to working with all four regions on the journey ahead.”

Earlier this year the Plan was subject to a 12-week public consultation which invited residents, businesses, community groups and visitors to help shape its final version.
