Pat on the back for firework retailers

We’re sending a big thank you to licensed firework retailers as a test purchasing exercise with two 16 year old volunteers saw them come back empty handed.

Sellling fireworks to any person under the age of 18 is a criminal offence – not only are they extremely dangerous if not treated with great care but they can also contribute to anti social behaviour.

IF WE GET A BAD SETTLEMENT, WE’LL HAVE TO LOOK AT FURTHER CUTS. HAVE YOUR SAY…

In all Trading Standards Officers visited 13 premises and every one of them challenged the volunteers for proof of age and subsequently refused to sell.

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead, said: “Every licensed retailer was visited during the exercise and they are all to be congratulated for their due diligence when selling fireworks to young people. We are delighted with the 100% success rate and would like to thanks everyone for their involvement in this operation.”

We’ve also issued some tips on how to stay safe on Bonfire Night that you can take a look at here
