Small fire, serious danger: warning after incidents at country parks

Visitors are being reminded not to light fires in country parks following several recent incidents that have damaged trees and put wildlife and the surrounding environment at risk.

The remains of a small fire were initially discovered at Bonc yr Hafod Country Park, where a number of books and other materials appear to have been burnt.

Evidence of two further fires has since been found at Brynkinalt Park. Branches have also been snapped from trees to use as firewood, while flames have scorched and damaged nearby trees.

Although the fires had been extinguished, even a small fire can spread quickly, particularly during warm or dry conditions. Fires can destroy important habitats, injure wildlife, endanger visitors and cause lasting damage to the natural environment.

Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment said, “Our country parks are there for everyone to enjoy, and it’s extremely disappointing to see evidence of fires being lit and trees being damaged.

Snapping branches from trees and lighting fires causes direct harm to these important natural spaces. What may appear to be a small or controlled fire can also spread very quickly, putting wildlife, visitors and the wider area at serious risk.

We would urge everyone visiting our country parks to behave responsibly, leave trees and other vegetation undisturbed, take their litter home and never light fires or burn materials.”

Visitors are reminded not to light fires or disposable barbeques in country parks. Cigarettes should also be fully extinguished and disposed of safely.

Jody McEachearn, Head of Prevention for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said “What may seem like a small, controlled fire can quickly become something much more serious, particularly during periods of dry weather when the risk of wildfire is high. Recent incidents across North Wales show how easily fires can start and how quickly they can spread, putting visitors, nearby communities, wildlife and the natural environment at risk.

We would ask everyone enjoying our country parks and countryside to do so responsibly. Please do not light campfires, fire pits or disposable barbecues, and ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished and disposed of safely. Litter should always be taken home, as items such as glass bottles and cans can contribute to fires and create additional hazards.

Every wildfire has the potential to cause significant damage and divert emergency resources. By taking a few simple precautions, we can all play our part in protecting our countryside and helping to keep North Wales safe.”

Anyone who discovers a fire should move to a safe location and call 999. Suspicious or deliberate fire-setting can also be reported to the police.
