Work is set to start on a community garden project that will breathe new life into an old school site near Wrexham.
Plans for a garden on the former Ysgol y Wern site in Rhos have been in the pipeline since early summer, and work is set to begin next week (from Monday, November 25).
The project is being led by Wrexham Council, Rhos Community Council and Groundwork North Wales, with full involvement from local residents. The work is being funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
Councillor David A Bithell, Deputy Leader of Wrexham Council with responsibility for decarbonisation, said: “Projects like this are really important to our decarbonisation efforts – encouraging communities to grow local produce and create environments that are good for insects and other wildlife
“There will be lots of opportunities for people to gain experience and learn a variety of skills around organic and complementary gardening, growing wildflowers, supporting nature, growing shrubs, fruiting bushes and hedgerows and going forward to support vocational training.
“It’s a fantastic project and we hope people will continue to get involved and support the work.”
The garden is one of several community growing projects underway in the county borough, with other projects in Third Avenue in Gwersyllt, Caia Park, Ty Pawb, Ashfield Park, Cefn Mawr and the Garden of Rest.
Here’s the timeline for work on the former Ysgol y Wern site:
Week commencing November 25
- Excavation and plotting.
- Works on access road and edging to the allotment area.
Week commencing December 2
- Raised sleeper beds installed.
Week commencing December 9
- Shed and water harvesting installation.
- Tree-planting.
Local councillor Steve Joe Jones said: “The community has been at the heart of this project from the very beginning, and it’s fantastic to see this piece of land being given a new lease of life.
“The garden will be a lovely place to spend time, and everyone will be able to get involved and enjoy being part of this collaborative effort to grow plants, fruit and vegetables, and support nature.”
There are regular meetings at the Community Café in Rhos (LL14 2HY) for anyone who would like to get involved. These take place every Thursday at 2pm.
