His day job may be working for Wrexham Library service, but after 50 years playing football in his spare time, David Bithell has been called up to play for Wales.
Of course after 50 years of playing his knees and ankles aren’t quite what they were so he will be playing walking football instead.
David started walking football about 18 months ago, playing for Brymbo Lodge and then moved to Brickfield, where he play in the North Wales League and various tournaments in the area.
Speaking of being invited for a Wales trial, David says: “In August 2024 I was invited to a trial for the Wales Walking Football Squad at Llanidloes and was luckily enough to be selected for the training squad again in September.
“After that, I joined the match squad to play a friendly, international against England, which will take place at the end of October. I will then be attending monthly training sessions – the next in Barry and then Wrexham in the new year.”
Over the next year or so David will be travelling the globe, jetting off to Portugal in February, Sweden in July for the Walking Football World Cup and then in 2026 he’s off to the World Cup in Australia.
Good luck David and to the whole Wales team.
