Our Trading Standards department has seen a rise in complaints from residents who have had roof repairs carried out.
The residents have often found the tradesperson via an online platform and are reporting poor workmanship, inflated prices and work being carried out that was not needed.
It is advisable to choose a reputable roofing contractor and to check them out before employing them.
Advice on choosing a reputable trader can be obtained from The Citizens Advice Consumer Service https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/get-more-help/find-a-trader-and-check-you-can-trust-them/
Residents can also find trades persons using
- Wrexham Councils House Proud Scheme
- Care and repair (services usually available for homeowners over 60 years of age)
When carrying out refurbishment work to 50% or more of a roof’s area, a roofing contractor registered with the National Federation Roofing Contractors Competent Person Scheme can be used or your Local Authority Building Control must be contacted prior to work starting. This is in order to confirm that the roof should be upgraded to meet thermal requirements of Part L of the current Building Regulations.
Cllr Hugh Jones, lead member for public protection said “Following our advice on how to find a trusted trades person will reduce the risk of poor workmanship at inflated prices being carried out, however it will not remove the risk completely. “Exercising due diligence ahead of any home improvements will improve your chances of getting the correct standard of work at the market price.”
