Eco-councils from 4 Wrexham primary schools went to Xplore! Discovery Centre for a celebration event to recognise the work they carried out during recent Carbon Reduction Workshops.

Pupils from Ysgol Alexandra, Ysgol Maes y Mynydd, Ysgol Cynddelw and Rhosduu Primary all received certificates and were congratulated for their hard work during workshops held at the schools.

During the workshops they looked at buildings and using less energy, planting more trees and wildflowers, considering how we buy the things we need and where we get them from and making more of our journeys in an active and sustainable way.

As part of the celebrations they also presented their competition entries to create a decarbonisation character which may well see the winning entry becoming the figurehead for activities to support local communities as we all do our bit to reduce our carbon footprint.

Katie Williams, Business Development & Stakeholder Engagement Officer at Xplore! said, “The workshops have gone down brilliantly with the groups. We have been impressed to find that many already understand the impact of their everyday actions. We can’t wait to hear of the pledges that they have made to try and reduce their impact further and to present each child with their certificate.”

Jayne Rodgers, Climate Change and Carbon Reduction Manager, said, “The workshops are an excellent way of showing young people the consequences of our actions in a fun and engaging way.

“We have committed to be carbon neutral by 2030 and we hope that workshops such as these will make this achievable and sustainable for everyone in our communities.”
