Celebration event for RAF Wales honour

This year sees the centenary of the RAF, the world’s first independent air force, and we’ll be celebrating by awarding a Civic Honour to RAF Wales to mark the occasion.

And in traditional Wrexham style this means a big and free town centre celebration for everyone to join in. The event will begin when the RAF Wales muster on Llwyn Isaf and there’ll be RAF exhibitions both inside and out and lots of activities for people of all ages. Highlight of the day will be a fly over by the iconic Dakota – military transport plane. It will all take place on August 25 so put the date in your diary!

SPOTTED A POTHOLE? REPORT IT HERE.

For us in Wrexham the Dakota is particularly appropriate as it was the type of plane flown by David Lord, VC, DFC, whose bravery ensured essential supplies were dropped over Arnhem during World War II even though his plane was damaged and burning and he eventually lost his life. His bravery is recognised in a memorial plaque at the Memorial Hall in Bodhyfryd.

The event will take place alongside the Street Festival on the August 25 which should guarantee a day to remember!

Cllr David Griffiths, Armed Forces Champion, said: “This is very appropriate for their 100 anniversary year and I hope my fellow councillors will be as supportive of this as I am.”
