Sixth form students at a Welsh language secondary school had the chance to take a look at the designs and layout for their new block – and even had the opportunity to tour the site before it opens next year.

Work is ongoing at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, Wrexham, on a £1.5million extension which will provide a new home for the school’s sixth form.

Back in July, contractors Read Construction began working on the new block, and much of the construction work is now underway.

Earlier this week, students were given a look at some of the layout designs for the new block, and even had the chance to take a look around the structure of the facility.

As well as providing more space for the sixth form, the new site will also include a number of new features, including an IT set-up which will allow students to link up their devices – both school computers and personal devices – to multiple screens while studying or revising.

The new build will allow us to increase school capacity at secondary level and secure the future of Welsh medium secondary education in Wrexham.

The work is funded from the Welsh Government’s Band A 21st Century Schools Programme, and Wrexham council.

Work is scheduled for completion in 2019, with the handover of the new extension due to take place in April.

Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education, said: “This project is part of our ongoing commitment to improving the educational environment in our schools and I am confident that once opened, it will be greatly appreciated by Morgan Llwyd’s sixth formers.

“I would like to thank the Welsh Government for their continued support of Wrexham schools and our Education officers for their hard work in delivering more school projects than originally planned, with no additional funding.”

Aled Roberts, Chair of Governors at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, said: “It was great to be shown around the new Sixth Form block with some of our students this morning and see how the work is progressing.

“Our students are helping to shape the scheme and the impressive facilities available once the block opens should enable our sixth formers to take full advantage and build on their achievements at GCSE at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd.”

Richard Heaton, Managing Director of Read, said: “We’re thrilled to be delivering this 21st century learning environment with Wrexham Council and our design team. Throughout the build we are engaging with the school and community to bring added value to the scheme.”
