Unlicensed Landlords Fined following successful prosecutions

Operating an unlicensed Home of Multiple Occupation (HMO) has led to two successful prosecutions by our Public Protection Team and left landlords out of pocket.

Christopher Tye and Darren Evans ( joint owners) of a property in Watery Road pleaded guilty and received 12 months conditional discharge, costs of £300 plus £22 surcharge each.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

Ronald Stapleton owned a property in Ruthin Road and was charged with breaching HMO management regulations and a breach of emergency prohibition order.

He received a fine of £750 for breaching the emergency prohibition order, £500 for operating an unlicensed HMO, a surcharge of £175 and costs of £750. A total to pay of £2,675.

Most landlords and letting agents ensure HMOs are properly licenced and maintained, but if your landlord or letting agent fails to acquire an HMO licence or carry out the necessary repairs and make adequate fire safety arrangements, you can contact the Environmental Health and Housing Standards team by e-mail at HealthandHousing@wrexham.gov.uk or on 01978 292040.

We keep a list of currently licenced HMOs on our website, and also provide information on what an HMO is, and how they can be licenced.

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.
