It’s all hands to the wheel as Wrexham once again gears up to enter the Wales in Bloom category and we’re hoping to come up Gold again.
As part of the preparations, and to celebrate the Tour of Britain coming to the area in September, we’ve created unique visual displays of old colourful bicycles that will be used for floral displays. There’s a lot of work now going on in our planters throughout the city centre to make sure the judges can see for themselves the attractive environment that visitors to the city centre can enjoy.
We’ll also be creating a trail around the City and we’ll be asking schools to make floral displays out of recycled materials that can be placed in shop windows, these will then be part of a trail that children can follow around the City centre.
The judges will be visiting us on July 11 starting at Holt, then onto the Industrial Estate to see the fantastic work that FCC has done around their waste site creating ponds, bee hives, installing solar panels even finding a rare orchid variety. From there they will go on to Rhosnesni High School where they will see their sensory garden and newly built allotment before finishing in the City centre.
One of the biggest parts of the Wales in Bloom is community involvement.
Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for the Environment, said, “We’ve done so much work over the past few years with tree planting, creating wild flower meadows and changing to our maintenance regime to encourage wildlife and improve ecological systems in addition to reducing our carbon footprint.
“But it’s not only our efforts the judges want to see. One of the biggest parts of the Wales in Bloom is community involvement. We want residents and community both on the route and across Wrexham to get in touch and let us know what they’re doing to improve their area. It could be litter picking, planting up baskets and hanging baskets to improve their areas or creating floral displays.

“With Wrexhams increased profile nationally and internationally, it’s important we show off the city centre at its very best.
“It’s great to see all of the hard work going on at the moment replanting the flower beds and planters and hanging baskets going up around the city centre with a “mixture of colourful summer bedding and sustainable shrubs and perennials that will be a beautiful show but also attract wildlife.
“This along with our events such as the Tour of Britain will make for a more vibrant, welcoming city centre that will attract more visitors to come in shopping or visit the hospitality businesses that will be a boost to our economy.”
