Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment, said:

“I am pleased that the Council’s Administration has worked hard to secure additional funding to improve our roads and infrastructure, which are important to local people.

Although considerable investment has been made in recent years, we recognise that parts of our highway network continue to face significant challenges. This programme represents an investment of more than £10 million in these vital assets, supported by the second year of funding through the Local Government’s borrowing initiative.

The programme includes:

  • More than £7 million for highway resurfacing projects across both the strategic A and B road network and local community roads.
  • Over £500,000 for improvements to footways.
  • £300,000 for repairs to highway structures.
  • The replacement of more than 400 street lighting columns that have reached the end of their operational life.
  • Further work to improve highway drainage, particularly in areas most at risk from surface-water flooding.

These improvements will help make journeys safer and more reliable for residents, businesses and visitors across the County Borough.

While this investment will not resolve every challenge facing our infrastructure, it demonstrates our continued commitment to maintaining and improving the roads, footways, lighting and drainage systems that communities rely on every day.”
