Are you thinking about getting back into work?

Or looking for opportunities to learn new skills and increase your confidence?

The ‘Confidence to Learn’ programme is a pilot project that will deliver family and community learning in local centres across rural areas of Wrexham, with a view to improving interaction between generations, building confidence and giving opportunities to people which may lead to future employment.

Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Development & Regeneration, said: “The courses will include elements which improve on basic skills, build confidence, assertiveness and develop new employment related skills.

“We will listen to learners and ensure we deliver the workshops they want.  The courses are held in small groups and include a range of subjects from healthy cooking to computer skills.

“It is hoped that a cross-section of the community will enrol on these courses, enabling knowledge to be shared between generations, backgrounds and experience, encouraging people to raise their personal aspirations and with the eventual aim of getting them into employment.”

Since September 2017, community consultation workshops and classes have taken place in Brynteg Memorial Centre, Plas Pentwyn, Coedpoeth, Gwersyllt and Llay Park Resource Centres.

Julie Williams attended the Teddy Bears Picnic family learning and consultation workshop held at Brynteg Memorial Hall, she commented:  “This was a great opportunity to take part in a craft activity with my daughter and meet other families.

“Whilst there I was able to have a say in what I felt was needed in our community and also what I would be interested in learning. I think this is a great project to help people build their confidence, and for those who may be thinking about returning to learning or work and want to increase their employment opportunities.”

There are more workshops taking place in the resource centres in the coming months – contact the centres for more information and look out for our half term workshops which include Junior Chefs Academy cookery classes!

Children have already taken part in a Junior Chefs Academy class at Plas Pentywn, Coedpoeth, led by Head Chef Paul Cooper. See the video here:

Wrexham County Borough Council’s Business & Investment team has received funding for this project through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.
